WE GATHER

Welcome  Rev David: May the peace of Christ be with you. Welcome to Trinity United Church in Port Coquitlam, BC. We are so grateful that you have chosen to spend some time with us, we are glad you are here. A gentle reminder that we are experimenting on a weekly basis with our social media and the technology, and some things will work better than others. So we ask for your patience and generosity of spirit as we forge a new way forward together. We do ask that if something technical goes wrong please let the leader and the hosts work it out. It is not helpful for people to turn on their own mics and start talking, it really only adds to the confusion.

Acknowledgement of Territory For tens of thousands of years, the lands on which we live, work and worship, have been occupied by indigenous peoples.Much of what we know as the North West Coast of North America was occupied by the Coast Salish Peoples. The territory where Trinity United Church of Port Coquitlam resides is the unceded territory of the Kwikwetlem First Nations. Our acknowledgement of unceded traditional territory is a first step in reconciliation between settler cultures and indigenous peoples and the decolonization of western systems that continue to oppress and exploit indigenous peoples and land. The work of reconciliation is daunting. The work of reconciliation will not be ours to complete, but neither is it ours to abandon.  We remember these words from the Apostle Paul, “[The gift of a New Creation] is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting [our] trespasses against [us], and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.” Let us prepare our hearts and minds for worship.

Call to Worship
Be still and know that God is.

Before creation began, the Ground of Being was.
And when all human striving has ceased, God will still be.
From everlasting to everlasting,  God is God, worthy to be worshiped.
Let us sing praise to our God.

Prayer of Approach

In joy and in sorrow,
in rest and in work,
in peace and in anxiety,
let us know your presence, O God.
Through this time of worship,
empower us to trust your love,
to serve your purpose
and to praise your name.  Amen.

Hymn: “All things Bright and Beautiful” VU 291

Prayer of Reconciliation and Words of Assurance
God of all eternity, your steadfast love endures forever.We come before you now, seeking reconciliation.We like to think we are in control, and that you will bless our will.When we think of others, it is with an eye toward their service to us.When we think of your creation, it is toward how we might exploit its resources.We fail to make your word manifest in the world, to reveal your love and justice for all peoples.We have not earned the privilege of being your children.We humbly ask forgiveness.Put the mind of Christ in us, that our lives might take the form of the cross.Use us to serve the world, to break down the walls of hostility and selfishness.Equip us to trust and fulfill your will, that we might glorify your name in all the earth.In the name of the one who sends us into the world to reveal your Good News, we pray. Amen.

Jesus gives us rest and peace.His touch heals us and gives us new life.We are forgiven, reconciled and made new.Thanks be to God.

WE HEAR THE WORD
Retelling Our Ancient Story
Mark 6:14-29.
14 King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some were saying, ‘John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him.’ 15But others said, ‘It is Elijah.’ And others said, ‘It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.’ 16But when Herod heard of it, he said, ‘John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.’17 For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. 18For John had been telling Herod, ‘It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.’ 19And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, 20for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. 21But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. 22When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, ‘Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.’ 23And he solemnly swore to her, ‘Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.’ 24She went out and said to her mother, ‘What should I ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the baptizer.’ 25Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, ‘I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.’ 26The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, 28brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. 29When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb This is the witness of the early church. Thanks be to God!

The Great Thanksgiving
 For each new day of creation when light rises over the eastern horizon;
For each bright evening as stars and moon shine in the darkness;
For the breath of life that invigorates and sustains us;
For the rains, streams, oceans and lakes that wash clean and renew;
For all creation in all its wonder and glory we sing:
Praise God!  Praise God!

For promises of ancient days made since the beginnings of creation;
For promises made to Abraham and Sarah;
For promises affirmed to Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Rachael, Joseph and his siblings;
For promises made and kept we sing:
Praise God!  Praise God!

For prayers heard and answered;
For a way of living given and received;
For release from captivity and slavery;
For abundance in the wilderness;
For a new life in a new land we sing:
Praise God!  Praise God!

For companionship on the difficult journey;
For sages and wise ones who call us back to the path;
For mentors and teachers who remind us who we are;
For healers and caregivers who mend our wounds;
For prophets and radicals who make us accountable, we sing:
Praise God!  Praise God!

With all creation, with all the saints, with all the voices around the world this day we sing:
Kingsfold Communion Setting MV 203
O holy, holy, holy God, O God of time and space.
All earth and sea and sky above bear witness to your grace.
Hosanna in the highest Heav’n, creation sings your praise.
And blessed is the One who comes and bears your name always!

For Jesus, who came to us, vulnerable and full of life;
Who proclaimed the promise made to the ancestors;
Who healed the sick and brought release to the captives;
Who cast out evil and preached good news;
Who lived peace and commanded love;
For the one who gave all for all we sing:
Praise God! Praise God!

We remember…
In this act of remembrance, we offer our own lives back to you, O God.May we remember that our lives are not our own, but belong to the great fabric of your creation.
Thinking on this, we proclaim the mystery of our faith:

Kingsfold MV 204
Sing Christ has died and Christ is risen, Christ will come again!
Sing Christ has died and Christ is risen, Christ will come again!

Let us pray:
Holy One, make us mindful of your presence in these gifts and what we do here;
May we receive wisdom, courage, patience and grace as we continue our journey with you.
In Christ’s name we pray.  Amen

God is worthy of our thanks and praise; and so we sing together:
Praise God!  Praise God!

Kingsfold MV 204
Amen, amen O Holy One!
Hosanna and Amen! Amen, amen,
O Holy One!
Hosanna and Amen!

And now we say together a paraphrase of the words that Jesus taught us:

A Paraphrase of The Disciples’ Prayer VU 916

WE GO FORTH

Prayer after Communion

For what we have shared in this feast, we thank you O God.
May what we have done here, so put its mark on us that it may remain in our hearts,
nourishing us, inspiring us, comforting us, encouraging us.
Grant that we may grow in faith to reveal your word.
In the name of the one who gave all for all, we pray. Amen.
