Trinity News for the week of June 26, 2022
Letter from our Governance Team

Letter from our Governance Team

Hello Trinity congregation,

Yes, the summer is here! The heavy blankets can come off our beds and our fans will be plugged in and ready alongside the jugs of ice water. During last year's heat we learned various techniques for staying safe. Preparation this year should be easier when necessary.

The Trinity Annual General Meeting is on Sunday, June 26 during the regular church service. The Governance team encourages all to attend at 10:30 for a blend of worship and meeting in-person or on ZOOM. The report has been sent out to all Trinity attendee emails and mailed by Canada post to those without emails. Thank you to all who prepared reports and thank you, Zoë, for putting this easy-to-read document together.

We celebrate the Doers planning team for hosting the first “in-person” Doers meeting since early 2020! The work of the church isn’t done without good communication and effort by many. Being together in person gives us all a lift and sometimes it seems we are happier to “Do”.  The lawn mower on the Shaughnessy church lawn has been getting more creative…. two beating hearts drawn in the grass! The butterflies and bees will be happier!

Any questions, concerns or suggestions can be taken to members of the Governance team personally or messaged to the church office. The summertime office volunteers will have access to the voicemails and emails keeping Trinity United Church’s communication open.

Blessings from Trinity United Church Governance Team,
Pat McCann, Wendy Squires, Robert Nicolson, Rev David Cathcart, Judi Carroll, and Syd Sawyer

DOERS Minutes

DOERS Minutes

Doers Hybrid Meeting – June 15, 2022

This was the first in person meeting held since Feb 2020.

A welcome back and acknowledgement of the territory – Peggy H.    Rev.
David presented opening and closing worship.

Financial Report:
        -   No report.

Governance Team Update:
-    AGM to be held June 26, 2022 in the sanctuary after the service.  Bring a bag lunch if you wish.
-    Judi C., Syd S., Rev. David and Robert N. are continuing with the discernment program.
-    Tom Shaw (previously from St. Catherine’s) is still in the process of trying to start up the soup kitchen.  He has some volunteers but is looking for others.  They will possibly be making sandwiches the day before the luncheon but these are things still to be determined along with the start date.  If you are interested in helping contact Judy C. and she will pass on Tom’s contact info.

General Items

Fundraising Idea update:
The Car Boot sale will be held Saturday, September 17th from 10 am to 3 pm. Parking spaces for approximately 40 vehicles will be sold at $35 each which will go to the Church.  Any monies from items sold will go to the seller unless they wish to donate to the church.  Lunch & coffee are still being discussed.  It is important that we promote this sale, so please let friends, neighbours or anyone who might be interested in getting rid of “saleable items” to contact either Wendy Squires at wsquires@telus.net or call Barb Robertson at 604-942-1161.  Each person at this meeting received 2 notices – one to keep for themselves and one to give away.  More info will be forthcoming as necessary and advertising is being planned.
-    Please keep your ears and eyes open on your travels over the summer as new fundraising ideas may come to light.

Christian Education:
-    Camp Spirit will be held July 11-15/22 for ages 5-11.  At this time there are 33 campers registered along with 2 leaders in training.  They are looking for another person who would be interested in leading an activity (a craft etc.).  All adults working around children will need a security clearance from the RCMP as the ones we have on file are now outdated.  Camperships will be $150, so please if you are able to donate any amount that would help those not able to pay would be appreciated.  When you make your donation, please make clear that it is to go to Camp Spirit Campership.
-    2211 have now finished reading the book “Cause For Hope”.  This book was enjoyed by all with many lively discussions.  They are planning a get together (picnic) sometime in the summer and are inviting anyone who would like to join them for this event.

Nominating:
-     Beth Anderson noted that all needed positions are filled.  She also informed the group that she will be stepping down from the nominating position.

Stewardship:
-    As summer tends to be the lowest time of the year for donations, a reminder to please keep submitting your donations over this time as our finances are in need.
-    Trinity pledged $10,000 to Mission & Service for the year 2022.  As of now we have raised $5000 towards our goal with the hope of reaching our total by the end of the year.

Break Out Rooms

Property:
-    Parking lot repairs at accessible parking area – Priority high.  People have fallen so edges and cracks need to be cleaned and filled with some type of compound.
-    Parking lot repair at lot entry area ramp – Priority high.  Numerous areas have uneven edges along sidewalk. Beth/Sheri will kill grass, veg. with white vinegar.  We will consider professionals to look at concerns regarding repairs and quotes.
-    Clean debris from fellowship hall fan (external).  Priority med.  This is very close to the Hydro line so Hydro may have to be consulted.  Remove bird nest material and wire cover. Replace “cover cage” on external fan with mesh cover that will keep birds and rodents out.
-    Repair, sand and paint Thrift entranceway railings when weather permits - Priority med.
-    Orkin to be contacted re: rodent traps.  No current information about status of KKP “infestation”. Check boxes around the building.  Need for inside mouse traps? Priority med.
-    Repair/replace light fixture outside kitchen furnace room door.  Also replace tubes around thrift, kitchen and elsewhere - Priority high.
-    Remove “popsicle” light posts and replace with some form of decorative stand.  We will get Ian MacIver to deactivate the power to lights.
-    Emergency Evacuation Plan has been reviewed and will be presented to the Doers group for implementation in September.
-    Lawn Maintenance – someone is needed to cut the grass before Camp Spirit starts (July 11th) as Sherie will be away.   She will be purchasing some soil and is looking for perennials if anyone has plants available.  A weed eater has been made available for purchase from Bet A.  Sherie B. will attend the Garden Club meeting next Tuesday to see how they might be of help.

UCW:
-    Coffee after services – A roster will be set up by Joy G. and Pat Mc. and posted for people to sign up on.  The thought is to have one person who is familiar with the set up try and find a person from the congregation who is new to this and show them the process.  If there is a Sunday with no names to help, coffee time will not take place that day.  The first coffee date will be June 26th.
-    Trinity’s car trunk sale to take place September 17th.  Everyone will need to come together to make this a success.
-    Thrift – Maureen reported that we are making about $700 a week (with June 15th being the fifth week open).  Items that are not being sold are taken to Big Brothers which we receive $.20 a pd. for.  To date we have made approximately $130 for this.
-    Pat reported that UCW has made $10,096.92 as of June.  Discussion followed and it was decided to disperse as follows:  $3,600 to Trinity operating fund, $1000 to First United Church, $1000 to the Food Bank and $400 to Mission & Service.

Worship & Music:
-    Monthly Hymn Sing before service is happening the first Sunday of the month.
-    The hymn books will be returned to the sanctuary this week.
-    The signup sheet for flowers in now up in its usual spot.
-    Bagged communion elements will continue over the summer and will look at possible change in Sept.
-    Scripture readers are needed.
-    Sept. 11th will be a welcome back service.
-    Oct. 30th will be a membership service.

Pastoral Care:
-    Changes with regard to sending out the written copy of Sunday service:  It will no longer go out on the Sunday afternoon, but will be available as a pdf copy later in the week.  You can click on the email link.  If someone needs a hard copy of the service, Rev David can supply one.
-    Changes on the Trinity Memorial page online: Names will be in order of the most recent memorials first.  The page will have our writeup of the person and then will have links to an obituary (if we have one), the YouTube or livestream of the service, the memorial video (if there is one) and finally a link to the pdf copy of the service.
-    There is planning for a Fall car trunk sale in the Trinity parking lot on Saturday, Sept 17th.  Please see the handout for information.
-    In mid August we would like to mail out to the congregation a Coming Events flyer to welcome people back in the fall.  If you are planning anything for the fall season, please get the information to Wendy by Aug. 15th so we can get it to Zoe when she is back in the office.
