Letter from our Governance Team

Letter from our Governance Team

To a church in social isolation

To Trinity congregation:

Leadership from the Pacific Mountain Regional Council has been ever present during these unprecedented two years with Covid 19. Tessa Brotsky and Treena Duncan both are worth reading as they reach out to church leaders in the region. This week's quotes are from them both:

For some of us, these days of uncertainty, war and instability are unfamiliar. For others of us, the ache of these tensions are all too familiar. I'm grateful for the places of love and moments prayer that I have in my life, that provides stability and comfort when all is presenting as grim, and unfair, and unending. I pray that you may have soft and hope-filled places to lean into for comfort and rest as well.
Warmly,
Tressa Brotsky
Communications for Pacific Mountain Regional Council

We will all have different comfort levels in different places, and for different situations. I pray that we will practice faithful empathy and commit to keeping United Church communities of faith and gatherings safe for immune-vulnerable members.
Blessings,
Treena Duncan, Executive Minister

Here at Trinity United Church, we have started our worship services live in the sanctuary with the choir leading the hymns. We were even gifted with an anthem this past Sunday…. such a treat! Singing the hymns with a mask on is almost normal … we sound much better than at home in the easy chair on ZOOM. Many thanks to the music and worship team for getting us into the sanctuary safely!

Governance team invites all (with your own bag lunch) on March 27 after the worship service to introduce Trinity’s Visioning Proposal 2022. Crafted from a process Trinity followed before Covid when we visioned what we want to see from our work, this proposal suggests the Purpose for Trinity and continues with our Mission - how we plan to accomplish our Purpose.

Just like everything in our personal life (we need to keep records, insurance, meds all up to date…), the church needs to keep its Vision up to date. Trinity's Vision is ancient and, to move forward, this needs to be taken care of. Strategic Planning says so!

Questions and concerns can be directed to Judi Carroll @ 604-941-2002 or Syd Sawyer @ 604-941-4565.

Blessings from the Governance team: Pat McCann, Robert Nicolson, Rev Cathcart, Judi Carroll, Wendy Squires, and Syd Sawyer

The week of March 20, 2022

Announcements

Hybrid Worship on Sunday, March 20, 2022 SUNDAY at 10:30 am: Rev David will lead our worship at 10:30 am on ZOOM and in-person. To join the ZOOM Meeting, CLICK HERE to "log on" on Sunday morning or dial 778-907-2071 to participate by phone. We will send out an email with all the ZOOM information on Sunday morning as well.

Lent 3, March 20, 2022, will also be an "In-Person" worship service: We are excited to welcome the Trinity congregation back to in-person worship. We will still be asking people to wear their masks and to observe distancing (no handshaking or hugging without sanitizer). Folks can sing behind their masks and we will be collecting offering as you enter and as you leave only. We will not be checking for vaccination status (and so keeping our numbers under 50 percent of sanctuary capacity, about 145 people).

In-Person Worship Notes: Entry is by the main door from the parking lot.  Side doors will remain locked. There will be no coffee hour following the service for the time being, but we encourage you to meet up in the parking lot to chat following the service--weather permitting! For folks not yet feeling safe to come to in-person services, the ZOOM invitation and room will still be open for you to participate in the service from home.

"Palm Parade Sunday": in preparation for Palm Sunday please take a picture of yourself and family waiving a "palm branch." The "palm branch" can be anything from a fern leaf, a spruce, or cedar bough, or a green streamer! Send the picture to revcathcart@gmail.com. The pictures will be compiled into a "Palm Parade"video for Palm Sunday. Deadline: April 3, 2022.

Town Hall and Congregational Meetings: As most of you will know and remember, two years ago, before Covid, we were on the cusp of beginning a feasibility study with the 3 Point Housing Society of the Pacific Mountain Region. We had hosted a number of Townhall meetings and weekly lunches to engage in a number of topics around future ministry and development of the property. In the early days of lockdown, this opportunity with the region fell through. Since then, the Strategic Planning Team has been largely on hold. However, with the passing of the $68,000 deficit budget for 2022 last November, the Strategic Planning Team has come back into action.

Please save these dates: 11:45 am, March 27, we will hold a Town Hall Meeting. 11:45 am, April 3, we will hold a brief congregational meeting. At the Town Hall Meeting we will discuss a proposal brought forth by the Strategic Planning Team and approved by the Governance Team. At the brief congregational meeting we will vote on the proposal (revised or otherwise). Both meetings will be hybrid (online and in-person), though not live streamed to YouTube. Please plan to bring your own bag lunch for the Town Hall Meeting.

Non-Event Fundraiser 2022: We are delighted to advise that the Valentines Day Non-Event was a sparkling success. Donors enjoyed the various menu choices, while schlepping about in their Covid sweats and slippers. Someone even reported an engaging conversation with their spousal unit! All joking aside, this non-event raised $5,111.60 for Trinity Operations. A-mazing indeed! Thank you for your support.
Sincerely, The Non-Event Team, Judy J, Wendy S, Betty Mc & Barb D

One-Day Thrift Sale: Due to the success of their last event, there will be another One-Day Thrift Sale will take place on Saturday, April 2 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm in the church Hall & thrift room. COVID protocols will be observed.  Please tell your friends, family and anyone you know in the community about this sale.  The more people made aware, the better our sale day will be!  If you would like to volunteer pls. contact Maureen Adams @ 604-464-5760.

Concern for Ukrainian Crisis: The invasion of Ukraine is costing precious lives and creating a humanitarian crisis as people flee to safety. The United Nations reports that a growing number of over a million people, displaced from their homes, are seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. Many have lost friends, loved ones, and property; struggle to meet their basic needs, and face an uncertain future. The United Church of Canada has created a webpage with information on ways United Church people can express solidarity with Ukrainian neighbours, including a letter template, CLICK HERE.

Mission & Service Emergency Fund: United Church Mission & Service partners are responding to the rapidly unfolding crisis. You can help by donating through Mission & Service Emergency Fund: as part of this Fund, 100% of your donation goes directly to emergency relief, with 85% of your donation responding to this designated emergency and 15% responding to future emergencies that do not receive intense media coverage. Right now in Ukraine, people urgently need shelter, clean water, food, and medical attention. To DONATE: CLICK HERE.

One Day's Pay Project: During the Lenten season, we, at Trinity, have challenged ourselves to set aside One Day's Pay as a Lenten gift. Each person, family or group can participate. During this 40 day season of reflection One Day's Pay can be an opportunity for the spiritual practice of giving. Monies raised will be put to the support of Trinity United's mission in our community.

Directory Update 2022: It is time for an update to Trinity's DIRECTORY.  If you have any changes, would like to be included or removed please contact Zoe at the office or Betty McLean at 604-468-2050 or betty-me-mclean@hotmail.com.

Mission & Service Report 2021: Congratulations! Thank you! Trinity people have again met their stated M&S goal and surpassed it. At the Financial Planning meeting for 2021, we set a goal of $10,000 for Trinity's contribution to Mission & Service. In 2021 we gave $12,085.85 to M&S--WOW! This generosity is greatly appreciated. Respectfully submitted, Joy Galea, Mission & Service Enthusiast.

Kapa’a United Church of Christ

Kapa’a United Church of Christ

Twinning Church

In 2016 Trinity United Church voted to become a twinning church with the Kapa’a United Church of Christ on the island of Kauai in Hawaii.

The Kapa’a church is a Japanese Christian congregation first organized during the Second World War, and very soon grew to become one of the most open churches on the island of Kauai. More recently the congregation has called a new minister to the church, Pastor Rob Bork from Wisconsin and his partner Michael and their 2 children, Kyle and Bentley.

The United Church of Canada has no formal rules around twinning, but rather a set of guidelines for those congregations that choose to be in a twinning situation. Twinning is simply two churches coming together over a hand shake. Welcoming congregants from each other’s church when in the geographical area. We already have an established twining relationship with the Wesley Broadway Methodist church in North Palmerston, New Zealand. For TUC congregation members Hawaii is much closer.

The General Council meeting of the United Church held at Corner Brook in Newfoundland 2016, passed a general order to be “in Communion” with the United States United Church of Christ and it was discussed that Trinity and the Kapa’a UCC would be a good twinning opportunity.

Fundamentally, the United Church of Canada believes that twinning is about building a relationship with a goal to developing a friendship and to become like a family. The motivation behind our relationship comes from the gospel of Jesus - we are all God’s children - we are a global church

The discussion was originally brought forward by Ross and Sandra Dunning who for many years have been visiting this congregation.
